4 Tips For Incorporating Art Deco Interior Design In Your Home

Posted on: 30 November 2016

Art Deco is an architectural and interior design style that first became popular in France just prior to World War I and was in vogue across the globe through the 1920s and 1930s. This type of interior design is typically thought of as luxurious, glamorous, and symmetrical. Art Deco is making a revival, and many people are choosing to incorporate elements of this type of design in the rooms of their home. If you are interested in revamping a room in your home and bringing in a dash of Art Deco style, use the following tips:

Incorporate Geometric Designs

Geometric designs are a big part of the Art Deco style, and there are several ways to bring the look into your home. Wallpapering an accent wall or purchasing a large area rug are two of the easier ways to achieve the look. Look for zig-zags, chevrons, stripes, or symmetrical patterns.

Use Bold Colors

Bold colors are a hallmark of the Art Deco interior design movement. Combine monochromatic palettes of black, white, or brown with bold pops of reds and other jewel tones for a dramatic look that will capture the visual appeal that is often associated with Art Deco. For example, in the living room, you may opt for an opulent sofa in a solid color and then accessorize it with bright, bold pillows, preferably ones with a geometric design.

Utilize Art Deco Details

The accessories you use in a room can make or break the Art Deco design you are going for. Look for brightly colored oil paintings placed in ornate Art Deco frames with a metallic or mirrored finish. Mirrors in interesting shapes and designs also look great in a room that is inspired by Art Deco. Sculptural lamps are also very popular in Art Deco design, along with finely carved side tables. While larger pieces of upholstered furniture tend to have clean lines in the Art Deco style, the other furniture surrounding it should stand out on its own.

Don't Be Afraid to Experiment

One of the best things about decorating in the Art Deco style is the fact that there are not hard rules. Don't be afraid to experiment with different bold colors and interesting pieces of decor. It may take you a little while to get the room exactly how you want it, but when you succeed you are sure to love the final results for a long time to come.
